Letters from Theodore Katz

August 8, 1945

[U.S. Army letterhead]

August 8th –
Pine Camp

Dearest Helen –

We arrived here about noon today after an all night ride from Ft Dix. Incidentally, I dreamt of you constantly on the train – all very nice though I can’t remember the details. But – when it comes to remembering details I only have to refer to the wonderful 30 days we spent together. I miss you so much already.

It’s now 3:30 in the afternoon and thus far we’ve been very busy establishing ourselves in our new “home” – and trying to get used to barracks life again. It’s all kind of crazy but I’ll get used to it soon.

Jack has the bunk next to mine and has been giving me the lowdown on his matrimonial venture. Their 30 days seemed a little too hectic for my tastes – but they had a fine time. You’ll probably get the details from Edith, who, incidentally, is in Washington right now.

As for myself, the stomache [sic] is back to normal and I’m feeling fine – with a good appetite, as you’ll be glad to hear.

Of course, it’s too early to know what’s going to happen to us, but the events that have occurred since I saw you two days ago will have a tremendous effect. First the atom bomb and now the news which I’ve just heard of Russia’s declaration of war against Japan. It’ll all be over soon, Helen, - so you see there’s nothing to worry about. Don’t let anything get you down – No time for more today – I love you
