Letters from Theodore Katz

June 5, 1945

PictureA self-portrait of Ted, dreaming of being home with Helen
 5 June 1945
Germany –

Dearest Helen,

Our censorship regulations have been relaxed to the point where I can give you some wonderful news – I’ll be coming back soon! That much is definite. I can only guess when, - but I can venture to say that I’ll be back possibly by the end of this month or the first part of July – of course I’ve known about it for some time, but this is the first time I’ve been able to come right out and tell you about it. I feel as though I were about to knock at your door – happy as can be with anticipation.

I expect a furlough very shortly after arrival and according to the rules it should be 21 to 30 days – all of which impresses me as something wonderful – if I may understate. Of course, I don’t know where I’ll land, etc. – but I’ll let you know as soon as possible after arrival. I know it’s kind of hard to try to make arrangements with the mail situation in the way it is now, but I want you to try to get a leave – (on second thought, omit the word try) – because you and I are going to spend a lot of time in Syracuse. So you see, we’re going to have that furlough there, after all – everything comes to he who waits – and we’ve waited – but it won’t be long now –

All my love –
Ted
